Negative Effects of Social Media | Virtual Networks and Communities

Social media has changed the way we communicate, opening up a whole new world of possibilities. But at the same time, the impact of social media may not be all that positive. Here we explore the negative effects of social media:

Addiction

Addiction is one of the negative effects of social media. To be fair, all of us are addicted to social media to varying degrees. But the more time you spend on social media, the more likely it is that the addiction is getting in the way of your personal life. You might start neglecting your family and not focus on your academics.

Isolation

Social media can cause you to isolate yourself socially. You might ask yourself, why go out when you can just interact with everyone through social media? That is because social media may convince you that you can interact with everyone in social situations but unless you go out and experience those situations, you will not gain the skills you need to survive in social settings. You need to have meaningful real life interactions with people to understand social situations. So it is better to go out once in a while and meet your friends in person.

Peer Pressure And Unrealistic Expectations

How many times have you looked at a Snapchat story of someone rich and famous and wished to be like them? Or even just a story of your friend doing something fun and wanted to do it? Social media can condition you to hold expectations that may not match your reality. It can cause an inferiority complex by constantly feeding into the need to fit in amongst your peers.

Mental Health Issues

Social media can cause mental health issues. Through social media, you are constantly interacting with your peers and being exposed to everything in the world. While that may help you stay up to date on what is going on around you, the constant engagement may also adversely affect your mental health by exposing you to the darker side of social media. You may come across horrible comments on Facebook. You may be bullied online. You may see disturbing images. The possibilities are endless. Social media can and does cause mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

Of course, the negative effects of social media do not outweigh its positive impact. However, it should still be used in moderation to avoid getting addicted to it.
