How to Apply to Study in Germany

Applying to universities anywhere can be a daunting task. From the requirements to the paperwork to the finances, you have to figure everything out and it’s different for each country. Germany is one such example. If you have chosen Germany as your destination for studying abroad, here is a guide for when you apply to study in Germany:
  • Learn German

Most courses in German universities are taught in German and there are very limited options available for studying in English. Hence, learning the German language is very important. Students need to prove their proficiency in German before applying to universities.

  • Choose universities and check their admission requirements

After choosing your university and the major that is suitable for you, check if your academic qualifications match their admission requirements. You will also have to check for language requirements and the tests needed to prove your proficiency in a language. For the German language, there are two tests: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH, meaning “German language examination for university entrance”) and the TestDaF.
  • Ensure that you have the financial resources

Before starting an application, you must ensure that you have enough financial resources to sustain yourself during your period of study. Thus, it is important that you start collecting money at least 6 months beforehand. You must have a minimum of €10,236 to cover your cost of living for the 1st year.
  • Submit your application

You can submit your application to the international office of the university. There is also a centralized admissions portal for international students, https://www.uni-assist.de/en/. Make sure that you have all the necessary documents. You will likely be asked to provide the following documents:
  1.       A certified copy of your high-school diploma or previous degrees, and any other relevant qualifications in the original language
  2.       A translated overview of your course modules and grades
  3.       A passport photo
  4.       A copy of your passport (personal information and photo ID page)
  5.       Proof of language proficiency (a test certificate or online equivalent)
  • Get health insurance and apply for the student visa

International students require health insurance before applying to study in Germany. You can look for how to apply for a student visa at the foreign office website.
  • Enroll and find accommodation

Once you enroll by submitting all the necessary documents, you need to find suitable accommodation. Most German universities do not provide accommodation so finding one is extremely important. Once you have found accommodation, you must register with the local registration office in the city you are residing in. Also, get a student bank account to make things easier.
We hope these steps are helpful when you finally do get around to applying to study in Germany. Good luck!
